Gopiettan No More - Bharath Gopi / Kodiyettam Gopi
“Gopiettan” as he is called by everyone in the Malayalam Film industry began his career as a Theater atrist.
He weas Born in Chirayankil (1937) of Thiruvananthapuram district.Bharath Gopi or Kodiyettam Gopi was shooting for the film “Dhey Engotu Nokiya” while he had a heart attack and was hopitalized.
Gopi made Movie debut with Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s first movie “Swayamvaram” in 1972, then followed “Ormakkayi”, “Yavanika”, “Panchavadippalam”, “Aadaminte Vaariyell” etc.
In 1977 he won the country’s national award for his role as a Villager in the movie “Kodiyettam” and hence his name.
And then in 1991 he was awarded the prestigious Padmashree.
He was reportedly Choosy about picking up his roles and still made more than a 100 movies during his career including the two Hindi movies, “Aghaat” and “Satah Se Udta Admi”
Mammootty expressed shocked on Gopi’s death. “There has been only one Gopi and he can never ever be replaced. I have acted in several films with him and was also fortunate to play the lead role in the film ‘Padhayam’ which he produced after he came back to the industry after suffering a stroke. His space can never be filled.”
